science illustration and art

Sitting next to this California native plant, I was surrounded by a sweet and not unpleasant odor. A fallen blossom provided the material for closer study with a dissecting microscope. The surface fo the calyx and the leaf is covered in a dense forest of hairs.

The flower was painted in gouache on colored paper before being composited digitally and labeled.
